General Practitioner

A general practitioner (also called a GP or primary physician) is a doctor who treats acute and chronic illnesses as well as provides preventive and regular care to patients. A general practitioner does not specialize in one specific area of medicine, but rather provides overall preventive healthcare. One other important role performed by the general practitioner is health education to the patient.

General practitioners conduct regular medical care activities, including preventive medical check-ups or vaccinations and immunizations against diseases such as flu, TBE (tick-borne encephalitis) or hepatitis.

A general practitioner´s role is also to detect health issues early that might require the care of a specialist. The general practitioner and the patient are often in a regular contact - and one general practitioner can take care of a patient for many years.
