Have you heard about post-COVID syndrome yet?

If you have had COVID-19, you may develop post-COVID syndrome. Read below about what post-COVID syndrome is, how it progresses and what follow-up medical examinations are recommended.

What is post-COVID syndrome?

The COVID-19 disease itself has a different course and length in everyone, some people experience post symptoms for several months. Post-COVID syndrome is a set of symptoms that persist or develop 12 or more weeks after the onset of COVID-19 disease, that cannot be explained by another cause.

How does post-COVID syndrome manifests?

The most frequently mentioned symptoms of post-COVID syndrome include:

  • Extreme fatigue, muscle weakness
  • Shortness of breath and respiratory impairment of physical activity
  • Chest pain and chest discomfort
  • Long-lasting cough
  • Inability to focus, memory outage, sleeping issues
  • Mood swings, sometimes accompanied by depression and other mental problems
  • Headache, joint ache, sensory disorders, tingling
  • Indigestion - diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting

But be aware that post-COVID syndrome can affect any organ system in the human body.

I have had COVID-19 and I have some of the symptoms mentioned, what should I do?

For patients who have had COVID-19, it is recommended to see their GP. At Unicare Medical the GP will check the patient's post-COVID status, persistent problems and optionally will perform a blood test. If a GP suspects respiratory post-COVID involvement, the patient will be referred for an outpatient pneumologist, who will perform detailed pneumological examination including screening (X-ray or CT of the lungs), examination of lung function, activity stress test (such as short distance walking), which detects the presence of latent respiratory insufficiency.

And what else?

Patient remains in the care of their GP. Both the pulmonologist and the GP will be able to investigate any signs of lung involvement. If another (extra-pulmonary) disability of the patient is found, the pneumologist or GP can refer the patient immediately to an appropriate specialist (for example, a cardiologist).
