How to choose a private medical centre in Prague

How to choose a private medical centre in Prague

Do you live in Prague temporarily or permanently? In both cases, a time might come when you need a specialised medical centre. You can, of course, go to a state-provided hospital, but if you are in Prague for a longer time, you will probably need more friendly, customised care, preferably in your own language.

Wouldn´t it be nice to have a local doctor, one who knows you, and a doctor you can see anytime you need a check-up or when you are ill? In this case, search for a private medical centre. Private medical centres should provide much better customer-centric healthcare than that provided by the state healthcare system. They also have the following advantages:

  • They are better equipped to offer personalised care.
  • Minimal waiting times.
  • Excellent doctor-to-patient ratios.
  • State-of-the-art medical equipment.
  • Upscale amenities and language capabilities.
  • Faster access to the best medical specialists.

How to choose the best medical centre:

  1. Check your insurance company payments

First, you should find out whether the medical centre has a contract with your insurance company. Because if not, the medical centre may not accept you as a patient (unless the situation is an emergency of course), or you may pay exorbitant sums of money. So, it is better to make sure the centre is one that cooperates with your insurance company.

  1. Look for the best services

Before you go to a medical centre and you do not need a medical emergency service (please read our article on what to do in case of emergency), check if they have the right doctor you need. For every specific medical problem, you can find a specialist, whether it is a problem with your knee, a headache, toothache or a stomach problem. You can also go to your general practitioner, and he or she will recommend a specialist. So, just give the medical centre a call and ask if they can point you in the right direction to a specialist or whether they can give you a check-up to recommend the next best step for you. Simply call and ask.

  1. Importance of understanding

If the doctor can’t speak English and you can’t speak Czech, both of you will be lost.  Fortunately, most medical centres have at least one English speaking employee, maybe some also speak German, but it´s always better to communicate with medical staff in your own language. With the right words, come the right treatment. So, make sure the doctor checking you speaks good English, which will be best for both of you.

  1. Good location

Location is important, as we may avoid going to the doctor if he or she is on the other side of the city or in the middle of nowhere. Find a medical centre nearby or easily accessible by metro or other forms of public transport. If it’s easy to get there, it’s easy to get home.

  1. Friendly staff

Friendly, welcoming staff are qualities you would look for in a restaurant review, so, wouldn’t it be smart to do the same when you search for a medical centre? Patients recover faster and better when they are in a friendly, non-stressful environment, full of professionals who really care about their health. But it’s up to you. If you need treatment quickly, go to the nearest medical centre and do not waste time searching the internet for the friendliest medical centres.
