An outbreak of mumps in a Czech region

An ongoing outbreak of mumps has been observed from the beginning of the school year 2017/2018 in Vysočina region. The most extensive increase of case was monitored in 52. week of the past year. Individual cases have appeared in Prague too during last weeks.

Usually mumps has moderate course, it can cause serious problems as well, such as deafness, orchitis or infertility in boys.

Mumps can spread through the saliva or mucus from the mouth, nose, or throat by cough, sneezing, or by sharing items such as cups or eating utensils.

Common symptoms of mumps are fever, muscle ache, headache, exhaustion, swollen salivary glands under the ears or jaw.

In Czech Republic the immunization against mumps is obligatory and is processed through the measles-mumps-rubella shot (called the MMR shot).

First shot is recommended in the age of 13th to 18th month and the second between 5 and 6 years of life
