Several cases of children infected by measles appeared in Prague in last few weeks

According to the records of Prague hygiene station (HSHMP) several cases of children infected by measles appeared in the region in last few weeks.

In the view of the fact, that outbreaks of measles in Romania, Ukraine and Poland are monitored and several cases of infected specimen appeared in Prague in last weeks as well, the immunization of children is highly recommended.

Measles is viral disease, transmitted through droplet infection dispersed by coughing, sneezing and breathing and is highly contagious. Source of infection is a person in first stages of illness before rash appears.

Symptoms of measles are similar to those of a cold. Cough, runny nose, eye infection and high temperatures appear approximately two weeks after infection.

In the world belongs to leading causes of children death especially in countries with weak health systems. Complications such as heart and respiratory or meningoencephalitis are possible during this illness. Since 1960 when affective vaccine was found, global deaths caused by measles decreased significantly. It is proved that 95 per cent of people need to be immune to prevent new outbreaks.  In the Czech Republic immunization against measles is obligatory according to law of common health protection as well as all patients with measles have to be hospitalised in our country.
